Warrior Nun (2020-2022)

My Quick Take: Warrior Nun is the show that inspired me to start this project! I am a huge fan of this show and I have watched it a few times, and I was one of many that was upset when it was abruptly canceled. While the friendships among the group of women and their united fight against evil is entertaining, it is the growing connection and desire between Ava and Beatrice that gives the show a beautiful twist. Even if you are not religious or know little about the Catholic church (like me), this show is worth the watch.

Synopsis: Teenage Ava (Alba Baptista) wakes up in a morgue and realizes she now possesses superpowers. She learns that she is the new chosen Halo Bearer for an ancient secret order, The Order of the Cruciform Sword, and that she must join the fight against demons and other powerful forces looking to take over the world. During her training, Ava forms a friendship with Beatrice (Kristina Tonteri-Young), and realizes that something incredible could come from this new responsibility.

Representation: This show provides important representation for those within the lesbian and queer community, and especially for those within the community who may be religious or grew up in a religious family. Beatrice is an astounding warrior who shares her struggle of being torn between her religion and who she is, and the resulting struggle of self-hatred and shame. Ava reminds her to love who she is because that person is beautiful. Unfortunately, Ava is killed in the last episode after finally kissing Beatrice for the first time and expressing her love for her, an example of the bury your gays trope. This trope was further exemplified when the show was canceled soon after. A major fan response followed calling for the show to be revived. This included a social media campaign, purchasing billboards and bus stop advertisements, signing petitions, and hosting live Q&As with actors and others from the show.
