The L Word: Generation Q (2019-2023)

My Quick Take: Having watched the original series of The L Word, I was excited to hear there would be a new series. While I did enjoy the characters, soundtrack, and cinematography, I was disappointed to see that the same stereotypes were being used. Also, just like the original series, there weren’t really any happy and committed couples, which was disappointing.

Synopsis: Set ten years after the original series and still in Los Angeles, Bette (Jennifer Beals), Shane (Kate Moennig), and Alice (Leisha Hailey) return alongside a younger generation as they experience the trials of love and life.

Representation: The original series of The L Word is a key example of lesbian and queer women being portrayed as promiscuous and obsessed with sex. The L Word: Gen Q does not stray from this stereotype. Additionally, just like the original series, there are numerous examples of unfaithfulness. This representation is harmful to the lesbian and queer community because it creates an impression that these relationships are not real and instead are driven by sexual desire. Additionally, after being left with a cliffhanger in the final episode of season three, the series was canceled.
