My Quick Take: Although corny at times, I enjoyed this film. I appreciated the storyline’s lack of homophobia and the absence of the usual coming out theme, and rather the normalization and acceptance of Paige’s sexuality. While it has a teenage focus, I think it is still enjoyable for all ages.
Synopsis: Paige (Rowan Blanchard) is a high school student and an aspiring artist who is forced to join her high school track team. Although this is not ideal, it gives her an opportunity to get closer to her crush, Gabriela (Isabella Ferreira), who is also on the track team. However, Paige unexpectedly begins to crush on another teammate.
Representation: This film finally provides the community with a feel-good romantic comedy that focuses on a lesbian/queer couple without any of the struggle. Paige is accepted and liked among her peers without any focus on, or invalidation of, her sexuality. In fact, the most popular girl in school, who is also Paige’s initial crush, is a lesbian/queer woman. This film also gives us the happy ending that we crave.
